When the Floor Goes Dark (Dir. Yihong Huang)

In 2023, Elevator Club announced its closure after seven years of operation. The basement on South Dandong Road filled with people who came for one last dance, until daylight broke and the floor went dark. Shanghai has had many clubs, but Elevator was always the one that was different. It was generous enough to hold even the smallest of possibilities. Beyond the weekly parties, harder-to-categorize imaginings and acts of creation took place here, which is why Elevator would come to be described as a "home" — it carried an ambiguous, diffuse quality, at once comfortable and close. As a starting point for community and parties to grow freely, its meaning had long surpassed that of a club alone.

Beyond the club, countless one-night-only pop-up parties continue to flicker on. Earlier that same year, party collective 4GABBERZ decided to throw a party with no door charge, just to cut through the boredom of waiting for clubs to open. They made their way through the desolate ruins of the city's outskirts, found a vacant floor in an office building, set up their equipment on concrete ground, hung blackout curtains, and sent dust and grit flying on a current of high-speed beats.

When the Floor Goes Dark is about everyone in the scene — organizers and attendees alike, all children of the club. In the space between a closing dawn and an opening dusk, between the going-dark and the coming-on, we recall the love and connection that happened, the feelings we shared and held together. None of it dissolved with the scene. Even when the lights go out here, we will find each other again wherever the next one lights up.

Watch it From Where They are negotiates the seemingly incongruous relationship between invisibility and visibility for those whose data information is prone to surveillance control. A set of bodysuits is made from machine-generated adversarial patches that are used against the popular object detection algorithm YOLO4.
Juxtaposing two screens side by side with two clips playing simultaneously, this two-channel video installation invites the audience to watch a stylistically composed ‘real-time surveillance’ duo monitor.
